Haro is the closest city to Bilbao airport in Rioja and it is a good idea to start your trip from this town. Since the 19th century, Haro has been the focal point of wine trade in la Rioja and you can find the best wineries in proximity with one another lined up in the historic railway station district (Barrio de la Estacion). The hilltop center of Haro is also a charming place to discover. Here is our list of what not to miss in Haro.

– Join La Batalla del Vino (Wine Battle), the crazy wine festival in the honor of San Felices, San Juan and San Pedro. The tradition dates back to the 13th century, however it assumed its official name in 1965. This three day event involves a lot of partying and throwing wine at each other in every way possible! The main square of Haro, Plaza de la Paz, turns into a massive street party with lots of food, drinks and music. There are also activities organised in the bull ring.

– Visit world-famous wineries (bodegas) lined up in Barrio de la Estacion. Haro is the most important stop in Rioja Alavesa wine route. Please see our list of best wineries to visit in la Rioja.

– Get lost in the labyrinthine like streets in the attractive historic center, also known as Casco Viejo. Do not miss bronze and stone statues depicting traditional trades and winemaking in back streets of Haro. If you are still not tired of Rioja wine taste, you can find best taverns and bars within the loop of La Herradura. Also do not forget to pay a short visit to Santo Tomas Church and the small adjacent plaza. Bar Los Canos was our favorite Rioja wine bar since it serves excellent crianzas and overlooks Plaza San Martin, a very adorable small square filled with trees.

– Terete, Haro, La Rioja, Spain: This restaurant just celebrated its 140th birthday! It is very close to the main square and famous for its meat that it locally sources. The lamb gets slowly cooked in wood-burning oil and of course needs to be accompanied by a great Rioja red!

– Beethoven, Haro, La Rioja, Spain: One of the most historic restaurants of Haro is Beethoven. The food and the setting are traditional but delicious. Locals hang out here as much as the tourists. (restaurantebeethoven.com; Calle de Santo Tomás 5)

Hotel Los Agustinos: If you want to stay right at the center of Haro, this is the best hotel. This former monastery combines tradition and history with contemporary comfort.
